IT/Telecom Industries Benefit Greatly From Project Management

(ARLINGTON, VA - Sept. 27, 1999) -- Overwhelmingly, the telecommunications and information technology industries are realizing the myriad corporate benefits that come from a structured project management approach, according to a survey conducted by ESI International.

Sixty-five percent of professionals who completed ESI's Project Management Professional Development Program and who have earned the accompanying Master's Certificate from The George Washington University (GW), cited project management's organized approach to formalizing work and skills as enabling them to enhance organization and planning. In particular, respondents cited scheduling, risk management, cost containment, contracting and vendor management as well as leadership and team building as immediately applicable skills. ESI, the industry leader in project management training for more than a dozen years, continues to train professionals with proven, reliable techniques and methodologies that enable them to succeed.

"The project management methods that ESI teaches have implications that go far beyond the individuals students' skills," says J. LeRoy Ward, PMP, Senior Vice President of Client Programs for ESI. "For instance, we discovered it's not just our students or our corporate clients who rely on ESI's expertise-it's their customers. Companies are using the ESI/GW project management master's certificate as a selling strategy; our students' customers feel that a grounding in project management training reduces risk."

Nearly 75 percent of the respondents indicated their organization has experienced quantitative benefits from project management. Chief among these benefits is increased customer satisfaction, including time to market. One project manager used the project management techniques to cut the completion time for a planning and provisioning project in half. One respondent reported that by employing project management principles, $28 million worth of inventory was moved flawlessly and systematically over one weekend in a national field restructuring of parts.

"ESI has heard success stories like these time and time again throughout its history," said Ward. "It underscores that project management is not a 'management fad,' but rather a systematic process that gets results the first time and every time."
